The text of the letter which was published in full in the Mercury on 18 February is here:
‘As secretary of Broxbourne Constituency Labour Party I am writing in response to the letter from Brent Cheetham in your January 14 edition. Mr Cheetham has clearly not realised what has happened to the Labour Party since we lost the May 2015 election. Even in Broxbourne, supposedly one of the safest Tory seats in the country Labour Party membership has more than doubled since the General Election. Many of the new members joined immediately after the election, but a whole lot more after Jeremy Corbyn became leader of the Labour Party.
This sincere, popular, moderate and respected leader has the potential to become Prime Minister in 2020. Yes, moderate – read what he actually says, not what Rupert Murdoch’s press wants you to believe. Our meetings are now attended by four times as many members as used to attend, and our new members are of all ages and from all walks of life but they have one thing in common – they are intelligent, active and fed up with the Tory Party, who have now taken off their gloves and are started showing why they are sometimes called the “Nasty Party”. Our members, new and old, are determined to gain votes from the Tories at the council election in May this year, and then in the General Election. Our website is thriving, see www.broxbournelabour.org.uk.
Have look in the Mercury in which Mr Cheetham’s letter appeared – you will see that Malcolm Aitken, Leader of the Labour Group on Broxbourne Borough Council, is right there speaking up for working people, homeless people, disabled people, people who are threatened with redundancy, all the people that this cynical Government pretends to care about but clearly does not.
Was Cheetham in the council chamber when the mayor rebuked Labour councillor Neil Harvey for “bringing politics into the council chamber”? The Tory council would obviously rather not be reminded that their Government’s policies are having negative effects locally even in this prosperous area. And it’s going to get much worse’
Have no fear, Mr Cheetham, democracy is alive and well in the Broxbourne constituency in the form of the Labour Party’
