Guardian asks about Labour membership in Broxbourne

Kathy, our Party Secretary had a call from a Guardian journalist wanting info about the change in membership in our CLP since the election. He’s speaking to CLP secretaries all over the country for a possible article. Roy, our Membership Secretary, supplied this information.

Before the General Election we had 140 full members, now we have 295. The number of affiliated supporters have gone up a lot as well and we now have about 150.

Only 19 of the 155 new full members are under 21. Kathy told the journalist that some older members who left during Tony Blair’s years as leader have now rejoined, but that there is a wide range of ages; also that our new members come from all walks of life.

Kathy also told him that meetings are now attended by about 25 people, while it was 6 to 8 before the General Election, and that we discuss national issues as well as local ones. He wanted to know how people feel about Trident and Syria etc but Kathy told him that she can’t answer for our membership but that we hear support for both sides at our meetings.

So watch this space – though the journalist said it would be a long time before the info is ready to go into an article.
