An open letter to the Prime Minister

Labour campaigners have written to the Prime Minister asking him to overturn the decision of local Conservative councillors who voted in favour of closing the Cheshunt and Hertford Urgent Care Centres.

Dear Prime Minister

Closure of Cheshunt and Hertford NHS Urgent Care Centres

We are writing to you in a last desperate attempt to save the Urgent Care Centres in Cheshunt and Hertford from closure. Both medical centres are popular with local people and are well used. However a local evaluation panel appointed by Hertfordshire Primary Care Trust, including four leading Conservative councillors from Broxbourne Borough Council and East Hertfordshire District Council, recently unanimously voted to close both centres.

Their concern was centred on claims that people with the wrong type of injury were turning up to seek treatment when they should have either seen their GP or gone to a local Accident and Emergency Department. We believe that it is outrageous to blame local people for the closure of popular services that are filling a vital need.

The closure of the two centres will lead to extra pressure on already overworked GPs and local A&E departments. The closure has caused great local concern as it means that local people in East Herts and Broxbourne will have to travel much further to receive prompt treatment. Not everyone has access to a car. This will inevitably lead to local people missing out on treatment or having to wait until it is a real emergency at even greater cost to the NHS.

We draw your attention to the Government's commitment in the Coalition Agreement: "We will develop a 24/7 urgent care service in every area of England". Locally your Conservative colleagues seem to be doing the exact opposite.

Whilst you conduct a "listening period" in order to respond to concerns about the Government's proposed NHS reforms, we hope that you will also listen to local people in Broxbourne and East Herts and stop the Urgent Care Centres from being closed.

Yours sincerely
