EXCLUSIVE: Council overcharging for more than HALF A MILLION purple sacks every year

Broxbourne Labour Party can exclusively reveal that Broxbourne Council has been selling over half a million purple sacks a year - and for a profit which the government says is illegal.

Last week, the government confirmed that it believes councils cannot legally charge more than cost price for sacks required to collect household waste.

The council has been purchasing purple sacks at just 3.7p per sack on a roll (4.5p per sack in a flat pack), then selling them on at eight times the price.

In the year to last April, the council sold 522,000 purple sacks at 28p each. This year, the council increased the charge by 7% to 30p per sack, making a stealth tax profit from local residents of well over £100,000.
