Rail co promises to act after councillor intervenes over Theobalds bridge eyesore
Network Rail has promised to renovate the dilapidated bridge at Theobalds Grove by the end of next month after Labour councillors got the council to threaten to use the law if the rail company failed to act. Deputy opposition leader Richard Greenhill (Labour, Waltham Cross) said: "For years we have been furious at the dilapidated state of the bridge and the mess caused by the pigeons. This bridge ought to be a great gateway between Cheshunt and Waltham Cross, not the eyesore it is now. I hope that, as a result of our strong action, we will once more be able to be proud of this landmark." Last week, Councillor Greenhill notified the council of a pigeon that had died after becoming entangled in netting on the bridge. The dead pigeon has remained suspended over the pavement, martyred by the bridge's neglect. Councillor Greenhill wrote to the council on 24 November last year, asking it to make use of the council's legal powers under section 215 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 to get the landowner to repaint the bridge and stop pigeons from roosting on the bridge and fouling the ground and seating underneath.
