Waltham Cross residents win roof-raising battle
Residents of Arlington Crescent, on the Hertfordshire/Enfield border in Waltham Cross, were horrified last month over a roof-raising planning application by their landlord to convert the lofts over their homes into 11 flats. The proposal was thrown out after local councillors backed residents at Broxbourne Council's Planning and Licensing Committee on 8 March. The unusual planning application, submitted without the consent of residents and leaseholders, proposed to convert the roof space over every one of the maisonette blocks in the street - including over properties which the landlord does not currently own. Speaking after the committee rejected the application, local representative and deputy opposition leader Councillor Greenhill said: "I am delighted at this result. The residents have shown incredible community spirit in the face of adversity, so this is a great relief for them and I pay tribute to the dignity and strength of their opposition. Your home should be your castle, and I hope any other developers will take note of the strength of feeling from all involved. "I was horrified at the fear and uncertainty affecting families as a result of their landlord putting in this application without any meaningful consultation. Arlington Crescent already suffers from parking problems and noise from the M25, which it directly overlooks. The proposal to cram 25 per cent more properties into every one of the existing buildings was appalling." Councillor Greenhill added: "I am greatly impressed at the way the local community has united to object to this unwanted proposal."
