Broken promises on Green Belt
Local Labour leader Michael Watson has hit out after the Conservative government approved development on Broxbourne's Green Belt. Councillor Watson said: "Going into the elections in May of last year, the Conservatives, both local candidates and our MP, made it clear that as a party they were committed to protecting the Green Belt in Broxbourne. "They had a prime opportunity to demonstrate this commitment when the Hertfordshire Golf Club development came before them a few months ago. It had already been turned down twice by Labour Secretary of States because it was unacceptable development in the Green Belt. "I made it clear at the Planning and Licensing meeting discussing this application that I would not support it, because I wanted to protect the Green Belt. Not one conservative supported this position. Not one. "Instead they voted it through with no concern for the Green Belt they pledged to protect. To make matters worse, the Conservative Government has approved it, making a mockery of its own Green Belt policies. "Never before have we had a Government which has broken so many election promises so early on in its lifespan. Unfortunately, whether it's the Green Belt, the VAT increase, police numbers or the failure to deliver on its pledge to control fuel prices, it's the people of Broxbourne that are feeling the effect of this failure."
