Tories set to destroy open air pool

Conservatives on Broxbourne's Community Services Committee voted in January to demolish the Hoddesdon Open Air Pool, rejecting proposals from a community group seeking to keep the pool open by running it themselves.

There were many people in the public gallery with placards protesting at the decision.

Speaking after the meeting, Labour spokesman Councillor Richard Greenhill said:

"By rejecting the community group's offer to run the pool themselves, the Tories have shown that the Big Society is nothing more than a Big Con.

"The Conservatives blocked Labour's proposal to halt demolition while the council draws up its new leisure strategy. Instead, the demolition squad are set to destroy the pool site. But the Tories will never erase memories of the shabby way that local people's wishes have been ignored.

"The independent site condition survey identified just £60,000 of repairs. With nearly £50million of local taxpayers' money in the bank doing nothing, the council has no excuse for not investing in our borough's future.

"Instead, the Tories are running our borough like a giant closing-down sale. We need a council with a long-term vision that protects front-line services and puts the community first."
