Why we cannot afford a Tory government
Labour's parliamentary candidate in Broxbourne, Michael Watson, has welcomed the announcement of a General Election, and has set out his case to be elected as Member of Parliament for the constituency: "This is the most important General Election in decades. The Labour Party took the tough decisions during the global economic crisis, and steered us through the recession. The question now is whether to cut the stimulus for the economy now, as the Conservatives propose, or follow the Labour route of continuing help to businesses and families whilst taking tough action to halve the economic deficit within four years. "The Tories have demonstrated through their proposed inheritance tax cut for the wealthiest 3000 families in the UK, and their promise to maintain national insurance at its present level despite the need to tackle our economic deficit, that they cannot be trusted with our economy." Speaking on local issues, Councillor Watson said: "Locally, the Conservatives have let Broxbourne down. They have stored up our council taxes to such a level (£100 million) that I am genuinely concerned that if a Conservative government were elected they would cap our reserve and take it back to fund their tax cuts for the richest families in the UK. "David Cameron says that Conservative controlled councils provide the blueprint for how he wants to run our country if elected. "The local Tories have closed a swimming pool, refused to make substantial investments in our town centres, cut environmental health services and took a year to admit they have awarded themselves expenses which were illegal, after the Labour group pointed out that they should not be paid. If this is Mr Cameron's blueprint, we cannot afford to give him the keys to Number 10."
