Leader pays tribute to Gina Aitken

Labour leader Alan McCole has paid tribute to 55-year-old Gina Aitken, wife of popular local councillor Malcolm Aitken, following her tragic death this week.

Councillor McCole said: "We're all devastated to lose someone so young and so suddenly. These things always seem to happen to the very best of people. Gina had a great sense of humour and was always willing to help people. She supported Malcolm through his brain tumour, which left him blind, and was always there for him."

Gina died in Princess Alexandra Hospital of bacterial meningitis. In 1996 she helped her husband to recover from an unrelated case of meningitis.

Gina is survived by her husband, their four children and seven grandchildren. She is greatly missed.
