Rethink on fair employment for disabled
Opposition councillors have won a u-turn from Broxbourne Council as it agreed to consider rejoining a fair employment scheme for disabled people. Cllr Malcolm Aitken (Lab, Waltham Cross), who is himself registered blind, gained the agreement from the council's Head of Personnel at a meeting of the Finance and Personnel committee. Speaking afterwards, Cllr Aitken said: "It has been a long struggle but I am delighted that the council is at last prepared to investigate rejoining the Positive About Disabled People scheme. I have been campaigning for this ever since the Conservatives pulled out of the scheme before I was elected. I am lucky to be working for local people as their councillor, but many other disabled people are barred from work by employers' attitudes. The tickmark logo is a great way to show people that they will be given equal opportunity when they apply for a job." For more information about the Positive About Disabled People scheme and the disability symbol that participating employers use, see the JobcentrePlus website.
