Tories lurch to right with asylum myths
Mr Bolden said: "It is a shame that the Tories have lurched so far to the right that feel they need to spread such desperate myths. "This is desperate scaremongering at a time when asylum figures are falling, applications are being processed faster and more failed applicants are being returned home than ever before. For every pound spent on local asylum seekers in 2001, we are now spending less than 31p. "Michael Howard lost control of asylum claims when he saddled Britain with a huge backlog of unprocessed applications while he was Home Secretary. Asylum is a tough issue but I'm proud that the Labour government has not been afraid to take it on and sort it out. The system has been made fairer and more effective. There are fewer than 30 asylum seekers in the whole of Broxbourne, as Marion Roe should well know." The Conservatives' own figures show that, from an annual peak of £5,896,000, Hertfordshire County Council's spending on asylum seekers is expected to fall £1,804,000 this year. That is a 69 per cent fall or equivalent to just 31p now for every £1 spent then.
