Revealed: WCs under threat

Labour has hit back at council plans to reduce the number of public lavatories in the borough.

Cllr Malcolm Aitken (Labour, Waltham Cross) slammed:

"Public conveniences are more than just a convenience, they're an essential facility for many older people and families. Broxbourne Council should improve these WCs, not abandon them. Council cost-cutting could cause considerable inconvenience."

Councillors were told: "To contain costs, councillors might take a view to close one of the least used WCs". Officers added that Broxbourne had received a "relatively low" rating for public conveniences in an opinion poll.

The council is negotiating a new contract for public convenience cleansing.
