We are now confirmed as the opposition party in Broxbourne.

A mixed bag of results on Thursday night. Obviously, we are disappointed about not gaining one seat, but, with the boundary changes (removing a Labour area and replacing with a Tory one), and a low turnout (28%), we can only move forward.
What we are delighted about is that we came second in every area, with a diminished UKIP vote.

Due to the sad death of Malcolm Aitken, there is a by-election on March 9th for the Waltham Cross ward.

Our candidate was selected by Waltham Cross Labour Party members and is already proving to be a popular choice in our various campaigning events.

Christian Durugo is a resident in Waltham Cross, and an active member of the Labour Party.16113942_10158149929080074_7363359855898946028_n.jpg

Members of Broxbourne CLP attended the Holocaust Memorial Day ceremony in the grounds of Lowewood Museum this afternoon. The photo shows the secretary laying a memorial stone.

There was a beautiful programme of readings and singing by councillors and by pupils of St. Catherine’s Primary School and Robert Barclay Academy.

Shoes were collected for charity and to remind us of the heart-breaking piles of shoes that were left after Jewish and other victims were taken off to the gas chambers.

The memorial stones are a Jewish tradition of leaving a stone when you visit a grave rather than flowers.  Speakers asked us to remember the victims of the Holocaust and of other wars. We must speak out when such crimes are committed in our own time.

Kathy Condon,  Broxbourne Party Secretary said this about Malcolm Aitken, who sadly died recently.

‘It was a pleasure going canvassing with Malcolm but you needed to be patient. The thing was, most of the residents of Waltham Cross seemed to know him and appreciate him, and wanted to update Malcolm on things he had sorted out for them. Or else they had a new problem they wanted him to take on. He would listen with great interest and concern and work out what he could do for them. It meant we were sometimes on the doorstep for an hour before we could move on.

His kindness to the residents was contrasted by his performance in the council chamber where he was leader of the Labour Group. He would give no quarter to Conservative councillors whose views he considered to be unhelpful to the residents. He was not bound by procedure, sometimes to the consternation of the Mayor.

Last year he laid the Labour Party wreath at the Remembrance Day ceremony in Hoddesdon. He did that with great dignity despite having to have a bit of help because he was blind. Afterwards he chatted to people for ages including to the firemen who had brought a fire engine to the ceremony. Many of them knew him and the others wanted to meet him.’
