A report from the East of England Labour Party conference in Stevenage.

Kathy Condon, our Branch Secretary, attended and wrote this report.

The picture shows Broxbourne CLP’s 3 delegates, Mark Hall, Mary Howard, Grace Tudor-Worrall, and Kathy.

‘The event was very well attended with around 500 delegates. We were all very sad but not surprised that Jeremy Corbyn was unable to attend because he was needed in London for meetings about the Paris atrocities.

A highlight on Saturday was a European report by Richard Howitt MEP describing how active he has been in Europe, in committees about refugees and bringing Iran into the fold, and about sustainable development. He pointed out that the Eastern Region had received one billion pounds of European funding in the last year. He was backed up by Pat McFadden, Shadow Europe minister, who told us that 200,000 businesses in the east of England had exported products to Europe in the last year.

Teresa Pearce, shadow housing and planning minister, told us how house ownership is at its lowest level for 30 years. Although the Tories said each council house that was sold would be replaced by a new council house, actually only 1 in 6 is being replaced (and 1 in 84 in the north east).  The number of homeless people is up by a third.

Seema Malhotra MP, Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury, spoke about the tax credit cuts, and how Osborne has repeatedly refused to do an impact analysis. Manufacturing employment is down by 10% since Osborne became chancellor. ‘
